John gave most of the pertinent info in his post, but if you have a question about the ratings system let me know!
On
a somewhat related note, isn’t it interesting how Fox News decided to
air a special about sexual predators on Xanga now that Fox and Myspace
are owned by the same company? And here I thought Fox News’
credibility couldn’t sink any lower…

Thanks for the heads up.
I like fox, but that sucks. Pete
The Xanga SafeBrowse radio buttons are disabled?? I cannot change the default setting (1st choice) to anything else. I can only manipulate the Self-Rating drop down.
I guess I havent seen the fox version of xanga predators haha…I hate fox. I dont think one democrat exists in that company. Everything is biased.
Yeah, I have a question. What about those of us with crap for credit and no credit card?
I suppose we’ll just have to stop reading people we’ve read for two years then. And to think, my site is a PAID site and I won’t be able to read my friends anymore. (Charged to a friend’s credit card because I don’t have one.)
Pfft.
(I have a few choice words that I’m keeping to myself so that you can keep your A rating.)
My rating is C actually
There’s only a problem if your friends are rated EX… We’ve explored alternatives to credit card verification and will continue to do so, but it’s the best form of age verification we’ve found so far.
Thanks, Patrick.
And D.
Which is where most are going to fall.
Can I cam you my gray hairs as proof?
You don’t need a credit card for D… trust me I programmed it heh
Okay, I am seeing D as a credit card and only EX. Which is it?
This is going to drive me to drink…
I do have a question but it isn’t about the ranking.
I have noticed that some sites using skins are skipping the whole “flag” process by not allowing access to those of us that may or may not feel that they should be flagged.
What is going to be done to thwart this?? if anything.
Thanks
tina
Where did you see that D needs a credit card? Neither of John’s posts nor the ratings FAQ say that… sorry for the confusion
You should be able to go to the comments section of one of their posts and flag them from there
Fox’s news credibility is just … pfffft.
Wow, that’s… low.
It would be nice if you could program the HTML on Xanga to make my computer drop gumballs.
Well, me and alot of my friends have either left or boycotted MY Space……we all Love xanga, and have good clean friends who we love. xanga has been good to us. None of us have incounterd any bad stuff, we have been safe so far
and we all have children on here too
One problem for me…..recently… alot of my regular friends cant get on my xanga??
there telling me there getting booted off when ever they try
whats wrong?? I pay priemum…please help me
It could be the fact that you’ve enabled Xanga Lock, so that only people who are signed in to Xanga can view your page. If they aren’t signed in they will get a message saying that they need to be. Can you tell me exactly what happens when they try to view it?
Ratings and censorship, is that what freedom of speech has become on Xanga? Kids will ‘borrow’ parents’ credit cards just as they fake birthdates, gotta keep a good real (not virtual) eye on kiddies. I wonder if people will do searches now deliberately to turn up the EX-rated stuff? Me and my friends used to look up rude words and body parts in the school library at lunchtime, same sort of thing really
The purpose of the ratings system is to prevent censorship, not create it. If we didn’t have ratings we would have to remove EX-rated material… we can’t just have it freely accessible to children. It’s true that kids can get around it as you said (no system is perfect) and that parents should have responsibility for their kids, but I cannot agree that we should do nothing on our end.
Radio buttons for “D” and “EX” don’t work for me. How do I fix that?
No, I never got a message about having to set my birthdate. The radio buttons are just blanked out.
I personally think the rating system is a good idea, but some of my readers aren’t too happy about having to provide credit card information, especially those who are over 18 but do not have credit cards (don’t ask). It’s a double edged sword, and Xanga is stuck between a rock and a hard place (hmm… what other sayings can I fit in there). On one hand, you need to protect the kids as well as shield the company from liability; on the other hand, any type of rating system, flagging, or outright censorship would have the user base cry foul.
Better/Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
Anyone who’s ever been on MySpace knows it’s a haven for sexual predators. You can find them on Xanga, sure, but on Xanga you have to look for them, they don’t look for you.
I’m on XP using IE 6. Pretty standard, I think. What kind of message is supposed to come up? A pop-up?
Interesting. I never saw a red box at all. Now that I’ve input my birthdate, though, the radio buttons work. It may just be my computer. Half the Xanga sites with ActiveX content crash my browser, so there may be some sort of setting on my end that’s preventing the birthdate message from coming up.
Sorry ’bout all the messages. I just tried removing my birthdate, and the red box did appear. It was definitely not there before… I would have noticed it!
i figured you’d get this before my email…soo…go on google talk. my aim is busted.
how ironic. Everyone knows myspace is crawling with sexual predators. I’ve always liked Xanga because unlike those other blogs (livejournal, myspace, etc) the people who run xanga honestly seem to have morals and care. It helps that the xanga administration post like normal users.
fox news is horrible
fox is teh sux -_-
projectblogsphere has a point though^^
This would be a great idea if it actually worked… I keep getting “We could not verify your age. Your credit card information is not valid.” whenever I put any of my card’s info into the system. Is this going to be corrected? I’m sure i’m not the only one with this problem.
